The Historic Urban Landscape
At the outset of the third millennium, Panama is living a transformation in keeping with the world-wide process of globalisation. This is the moment to reason over strategies for the future, design new scenarios, propose guidelines for integrated territorial management, and understand perceptions of Cultural Heritage and of Modernity. This is why the Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (UNESCO 2011) enjoys a very favourable welcome in Panama, above all when it states "Recognizing, the dynamic nature of living cities, … this wider context includes notably ... its built environment, both historic and contemporary”. “The historic urban landscape approach is aimed at preserving the quality of the human environment, enhancing the productive and sustainable use of urban spaces, while recognizing their dynamic character, and promoting social and functional diversity. It integrates the goals of urban heritage conservation and those of social and economic development."
